President Barry Thompson presided at the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield held at the Olde House, Newbold, on Friday 15 March 2019. He gave an update on members ill-health, and due to the indisposition of past-president Jim Haggarty, members decided to cancel the forthcoming Whisky Tasting Evening on Saturday 23 March 2019, an event Jim was personally organising.
President nominee and past-president Rob Wadd reported that Rotary membership in District 1220 was standing still at 1,911 (1,912 at start of the Rotary Year) due to 71 new members in and 72 existing members out).
Update on APS Support UK
Guest speaker was Phil Godfrey from APS Support UK the only UK charity dedicated to raising awareness and supporting anyone affected by APS, which is antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), sometimes known as ‘sticky blood’. He explained that this is an autoimmune disease which affects the blood and its ability to clot. An overactive immune system produces antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) which causes the blood to clot too quickly both in veins and arteries. The consequences can include potentially fatal conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, and DVTs. It is incurable but controllable.
Following the death of his wife, after a mis-diagnosis for APS, Phil is travelling the country to raise awareness of the condition and raise money for the charity. So far, he has raised £91,000, which has been used to create e-learning for doctors as 37% are unaware of the condition, likewise dentists and opticians. We are the 62nd Rotary Club he has visited and is due to visit 42 more this year. More details about the charity: https://bit.ly/2HsQZxP

The next club meeting on Friday 22 March 2019 is the monthly business meeting for Club Service projects. Duty rotarian is Garth Rendle.
