President Barry Thompson presided at the monthly business meeting of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield held at the Olde House, Newbold, on Friday 14 December 2018.
Information boards circulated were: Calendar of events, Attendance register, Santa’s Sleigh volunteers, attendance at Public Speaking Finals/Ladies & Partners Day on 18 January 2019, Burns Night Supper at the Olde House on Saturday 26 January 2019.
Correspondence: The president reported how rewarding it was to get feedback about the support the club gives to the local community. A letter of thanks from the Cotton Millers Club highlighted how the donation of £250 will help sustain support to those with learning difficulties; and a second letter of thanks was received from Year 2 Foxes class at William Rhodes Primary School about the opportunity given to the children to see the wonderful pantomime Cinderella at the Pomegranate Theatre, for many ‘it had been the best day of their lives’. There was also an invite for a couple of rotarians to see the class’s Nativity Play at the school on Wednesday 19 December 2019 at 2.00pm.
Year-end accounts for 2017-18: The accounts have now been handed over to Mike Hadfield for auditing and formal membership endorsement of the accounts will be at an SGM in the New Year.

Community Service – Santa’s Sleigh: The treasurer reported that £1,400 had been raised so far at Sainsburys and Morrisons. There are two key dates left for charity fundraising at Tesco Extra on Sunday 23 Dec and Monday 24 Dec. Contact George Freeman if able to volunteer to fill a couple of gaps on 24 Dec.
Community Service – Public Speaking Final: Five secondary schools are taking part in this year’s competition and, following a preliminary round, there will be four finalists in the final at the club meeting on Friday 18 January 2019. This has also been designated Ladies/Partners Day for members’ wives and members of Chesterfield Inner Wheel. This annual event is being organised this year by rotarian Paul Davies of the Satellite Club.
Vocational Service – Chesterfield Schools Art Exhibition: Back in October a successful Art Exhibition was held at St Andrews United Reformed Church and organised by rotarian John Nettleship of the Satellite Club. The winner of the Ian Gordon Art Prize for an Outstanding Exhibit was Reuben Amissah from Parkside Community School who was presented with an art prize of art materials to the value of £50 at the school’s GCSE Awards Night on Thursday 6 December 2018. New Rotary Club in Chesterfield: A report on a recruitment meeting organised by District 1220 at Chesterfield Royal Hospital was given by ADG Rob Wadd. A former member of Rotaract from Mansfield who attended is being put in touch with a club in her own area.
Club succession plan for club officers: Members decided at the SGM on Friday 9 November 2018 to consider a succession plan for club officers which incorporated the Satellite Club, and that a joint steering group should be set up to progress this in an orderly manner that preserves the legacy of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield. As a result, members also decided that the appointment of a president-elect and president-nominee for 2019-20 should be held in abeyance contingent to the outcome of these discussions. Following an exploratory meeting, reported last month, Satellite Club members, who were informed about the proposals at their December meeting, will now consider them in greater detail at a special Satellite Club meeting on 9 January 2019 for Satellite Club members only. They will also consider the filling by co-option of the three current vacancies on Club Council.
Joint Christmas Meeting: Members expressed their pleasure at the delightful joint Christmas meeting held with Chesterfield Inner Wheel at the Sandpiper Hotel on Friday 7 December 2018 and congratulated the ladies for the organisation and entertainment provided.
Christmas and New Year: There will be no Rotary meeting on Friday 28 December 2018. The first meeting in the New Year will be Friday 4 January 2019 when we will be making a presentation to Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity from the proceeds of Eckington Classic Car & Bike Show.
The next club meeting on Friday 14 December is a social meeting when the Olde House will be serving a Christmas meal with crackers for the normal price. Duty rotarian is rob Wadd.
