MEETING REPORT

    

President Barry Thompson presided at the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield held at the Olde House, Newbold, on Friday 19 October 2018. As it was the annual civic visit the president welcomed the Mayor & Mayoress of Chesterfield, Cllr Stuart & Anne Brittain, Chesterfield BC chief executive Huw Bowen, Satellite Club secretary Paul Davies, the joint presidents of Chesterfield Inner Wheel, Adrienne Handley and Joan Wadd, along with Inner Wheel members, and the wives of rotarians.

    

Civic Visit

    

The Mayor of Chesterfield, Cllr Stuart Brittain thanked the club for the invitation to visit and thanked the club for all the local community work it does in supporting local charities.  He said he is proud of Chesterfield.

    

For the 11th consecutive year the Chesterfield Borough Council chief executive Huw Bowen gave an illustrated update on the local developments taking place in the Chesterfield area, and the work and role of Chesterfield BC in supporting the local community. The aim is to make Chesterfield a thriving Borough, to improve quality of life for local people, and to provide value for money for Council services.  Updates were given on the Northern Gateway development, Peak Resort, Waterside, Garden Village of 1,000 houses in the Staveley/Barrow Hill area, and the latest to hit the news, the possibility of attracting Spanish railway manufacturer Talgo to build a factory in the Staveley corridor leading to 1,000 jobs, and a further 6,000 jobs in the supply chain.  A decision is expected early November 2018.

After a question of answer session, the president proposed a vote of thanks for the interesting presentation, and to the guests for visiting the club.

     

Joint Meetings with Inner Wheel

      

Chesterfield Inner Wheel president Adrienne Handley looked forward to the joint Christmas meeting with rotarians at the Sandpiper Hotel on Friday 7 December 2018.  The president revealed that the finals of the Chesterfield Schools Public Speaking Competition will be held, as part of the club’s annual Ladies Day, on Friday 18 January 2019, to which Inner Wheel members and rotarians wives are once again invited.

     

Next Meeting

          

The after-lunch speaker at the next club meeting on Friday 26 October 2018 is Barbara Wallace of the Nenna Kind Cancer Support Centre who will be receiving a donation as part of the club’s annual disbursements.  Speaker host is John Roberts, and duty rotarian is Geoff Mitchell.
