President Barry Thompson presided at the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield held at the Olde House, Newbold, on Friday 17 August 2018.
The after-lunch speaker was local historian Adrian Gray from Nottinghamshire, who has written a range of books on historical topics, including folk tales of the North Midlands area. His talk centred on one of the stories from his book 'From Here We Changed The World' which chronicles amazing stories of Pilgrims and Rebels from the North Midlands. The rebel in question was Chesterfield resident Isobel Foljambe of Walton, who was involved in the birth of the radical non-conformist Christianity movement, which eventually led to the puritans emigrating on the Mayflower to New England. She stayed put and continued to live in the area.
