President Barry Thompson presided at the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield held at the Olde House, Newbold, on Friday 13 July 2018.


Official visit of local Probus clubs


The president welcomed the current chairpersons from four local Probus clubs who were making their annual visit to the club:- Chris Weston Taylor (Harwick Probus), Kath Dennison (Eastwood Ladies’ Probus), Marilyn James (Nightingale Ladies' Probus), and Richard Lindsey (Scarsdale Probus).  The guests were hosted by Rotary probus liaison officer, past-president David Windle.

District Handover


The president reported that he, along with secretary Mike Cudzich-Madry, and president-nominee and assistant DG, Rob Wadd, had attended the official District Handover, held at the Hostess Restaurant, where the new District Governor, Dr Cheryle Berry, MBE (Clay Cross) was officially installed for Rotary Year 2018-19.




The president reported on a short-term supply problem following a request from the Aquabox project at Wirksworth for supplies of toilet soap, toothpaste, and tubes of anti-septic cream.  He will arrange collection and despatch to Wirksworth.


White Hall Outdoor Education Centre


The president reported that White Hall, one of the country’s leading Outdoor Education Centres, situated in a stunning location in the beautiful Peak District National Park, is making a video. Originally opened in 1951 as Britain’s first Local Education Authority Outdoor Centre, it is keen to invite people, maybe current Rotarians, who have ever been there in the past to come forward to be featured in the video. 


History of the Parachute


A regular after-lunch speaker at the club, past-president Malcolm Darroch (Wollaton Park), gave an interesting talk on the ‘History of the Parachute’. Speaker host, rotarian George Freeman, proposed a vote of thanks.

Next Meeting


At the next club meeting on Friday 20 July 2018 the after-lunch speaker is Mike Newbold on ‘My Extra Life in TV and the Theatre’.  Speaker host is Rob Wadd and duty rotarian is Charles Evans.
