President Peter Barr presided at the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield held at the Olde House, Newbold, on Friday 27 October 2017. He welcomed the return of past-president David Longden.
The president welcomed past-president Graham Hayes (Wollaton Park), who was the guest speaker, and regular guest, past-president Frank Clifford (Bolsover).
Wine was provided by past-president John Heath in celebration of his 90th birthday earlier in the month.

News of sick members
President Peter Barr reported the encouraging news that past-president Ian Gaunt, currently in hospital recovering from a broken leg, was now expected to be discharged in around 10 days time, rather than after the 4 weeks first indicated.
Satellite Club Report
Past-president Geoff Mitchell reported that he, treasurer Alan Clarke, and past-president Rob Wadd had attended the monthly meeting of the Rotary Satellite Club of Chesterfield held at Brampton Manor on Wednesday 25 October 2017. A new member had attended for the first time – solicitor Louise Wainwright who is an existing rotarian from the former Drone Valley Rotary Club. Arrangements for the Charity Quiz Night, being held at the Fox and Goose on Thursday 16 November 2017, had been discussed.
Satellite Club members present a cheque to Esther Botham of
the Friends of Somersall Park
A cheque for £250 had been presented to Esther Botham of the Friends of Somersall Park to help provide a new children’s play space. Members are encouraged to visit the Friends of Somersall Park website and click on the link for Aviva Community Funding and vote to help secure a grant of £25k for this worthwhile project. http://bit.ly/2zPrT4Y
British Submarine Warfare
The after-lunch speaker was past-president Graham Hayes (Wollaton Park), who gave an illustrated talk on submarines and the cramped life of a sub-mariner. He gave a potted history of the submarine from its first invention in 1620, all the trials and tribulations along the way, before majoring on some heroic exploits of sub-mariners during WW1 and WW2. A formal vote of thanks was proposed by speaker host, past-president Jim Haggarty.

The meeting was brought to a close when the closing toast was proposed by past-president John Roberts. The guest speaker at the next club meeting on Friday 3 November 2017 is Edward Hammond on ‘Napoleon’s British Obsession: Invasion of the Nation of Shopkeepers’. The speaker host is Roy Willett and duty rotarian is Charles Evans.
