International Citizenship Service
After-lunch speaker, Hannah Potter, a student at the University of Sheffield, gave an interesting talk on her selection by the Voluntary Services Organisation (VSO) for an International Citizen Service (ICS) placement in Cambodia. ICS works with communities which have specifically requested their help. Everyday around 1,500 VSO volunteers are working in carefully selected placements, sharing their experiences and working to tackle poverty by empowering those really affected by it.
Hannah explained that the first part of her placement is to raise £800 towards the work of VSO and their ICS partners. The money raised will go towards enabling the overall costs of ICS, ensuring they can continue sending youth volunteers to the developing world to make a lasting difference to disadvantaged communities. Hannah has organized a number of fund-raising events totalling over £700 so far, and has a Just Giving page http://bit.ly/2r4vF8j

After a question and answer session, a vote of thanks to the speaker was proposed by speaker host, past-president Jim Haggarty. The club made a donation of £60 towards Hannahís fund-raising efforts, and members requested that Hannah return to give an update on her return from Cambodia, which she agreed to do.
The closing toast was proposed by past-president John Roberts. The after-lunch speaker at the next meeting on Friday 2 June 2017 is past-president Tony Bethell (Dronfield), on 'Hospitaller Knights of the Order of St Johní. Speaker host is Charles Evans and duty rotarian is Geoff Mitchell.
