President Mike Cudzich-Madry presided at the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield held at the Olde House, Newbold, on Friday 24 February 2017. He welcomed district governor-nominee Cheryle Berry (Clay Cross), who brought greetings from the members of her Rotary club, and regular guest past-president Frank Clifford (Bolsover). He also welcomed rotarian Paul Davies (Chesterfield Satellite Club) and his son Andrew Davies, who was guest speaker at today’s meeting.
Information boards circulated included:- attendance register, club calendar, Whisky Tasting Evening at the Olde House on Friday 10 March 2017, and the theatre visit to the Pomegranate to see Chesterfield Operatic Society’s performance of the musical Hairspray on Thursday 27 April 2017.
Letters of thanks
The president read out letters of thanks for recent donations made by the club to Hope Springs Recovery Centre (£110 from Burns Night) which supports local people recovering from drug and alcohol abuse, and Mary’s Meals (£356) a charity which provides a daily meal for needy youngsters in several countries abroad.
Polio Plus Update
DG nominee Cheryle Berry gave members an update on Rotary’s worldwide project to eliminate polio, and which was close to succeeding. She revealed that Tiptree jam makers, Wilkins & Sons Ltd, were donating 42,000 jars of jam, one for every Rotarian in Great Britain and Ireland. The aim is for all members to use the jar to help raise further funds for Rotary’s Polio Plus Campaign.
After-lunch speaker Andrew Davies, 18 year old head-boy from Lady Manners School, gave an inspiring illustrated talk about his brave fight against leukaemia and subsequent fund-raising for Sheffield Children's Hospital and other high-profile national charities. He has so far raised £106,526.45 of his target of £150,000, which is the equivalent cost of his bone marrow transplant on the NHS. His next major fund-raising event is a Spring Ball at the Proact Stadium on Friday 28 April 2017. Check out Support for Andrew and click here to donate http://bit.ly/2deXkOs
