MEETING REPORT

 

Joint-president Ian Gaunt presided at the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield held at the Olde House, Newbold, on Friday 19 February 2016. He welcomed past-president Frank Clifford, past-president of the Rotary Club of Bolsover, and Barry Thompson, guest of past-president John Keeton.

 

Information boards circulated included:- the club calendar, details of the club’s Whisky Tasting Social Evening being held at the Olde House on Friday 4 March, and a theatre visit to see Chesterfield Operatic Society’s performance of Jesus Christ Superstar in April 2016.

 

Hon Sec John Hare reported that a donation of £20 had been received from the grateful family of a regular recipient of the club’s annual ‘hyacinth bulbs for the housebound’ scheme.
 

Joint-president Mike Hadfield brought greetings from the Rotary Club of Chesterfield Scarsdale following their 35th Charter Anniversary which he had attended at the Proact Stadium with his wife Sue.  Also representing the club at this event had been past president’s John & Pam Hare, John & Liz Keeton, Geoff & Margaret Mitchell, and John Moss.

 

The guest speaker was Cliff Lea of the Arkwright Society who expertly spun the fascinating story of Richard Arkwright with an illustrated talk about the rise of the Arkwright family and the impact of the revolutionary water-powered cotton spinning mill at Cromford. Members were invited to visit the new Visitor Centre which is being officially opened in March 2016.  More details about Cromford Mills:-   http://bit.ly/1osB703

A vote of thanks was proposed by rotarian Garth Rendle. The meeting was brought to a close when past-president Roy Willett proposed the closing toast.

 

The guest speaker at the next meeting on Friday 26 February is Liz Roberts on ‘My trip to Nepal’.  Speaker host is John Roberts and duty rotarian is Rob Wadd.
