YOUNG CHEF'S COMPETITION 2016
On 29 January 2016 the Young Chef Competition was again held at Parkside Community School. This is the fifth year the school has sponsored the Competition venue. The Club are grateful for the support of the Head Teacher, Mrs Kam Grewal-Joy, the teaching and support staff and the Chair of School Governors, Mrs Jean Horton, in providing the facilities for the Competition.
Pictured above, at their work stations and ready to start cooking, are the four competitors who took part in the 2016 competition. They are: On the left front to back Alex Stephenson, Whittington Green School and Cameron Mark, Parkside Community School, and on the right front to back are: Hannah Parnaby St Mary’s Catholic High School and Ty Bridges, Springwell Community College.
The challenge for the four students was to cook a two course healthy eating meal, a Starter and Main Course, for two people, in two hours within a budget of £15.

Cameron Mark, Parkside Community School, decided on a starter of Mexican Stuffed Peppers and a main course Chilli Con Carne. The photograph below shows Cameron making progress on her two dishes.
Ty Bridges, Springwell Community College, opted for a Chinese flavour for his two courses. The starter dish was a Chinese Quiche and his main course was Chinese Beef stir fried with Vermicelli. The photograph below shows Ty with his starter course already prepared as he makes progress with his main course of Chinese Beef.
Hannah Parnaby, St Mary’s Catholic High School, choose a starter of King Scallops served on a bed of pea puree topped with asparagus marinated salad. Her main course was Sea Bass in a white wine and cream sauce. The photograph below shows Hannah preparing her two course meal.
Following the cooking, three Judges reviewed and tasted each of the four meals. The Panel of Judges for the Competition were: Rotarian Charles Evans, Chesterfield Inner Wheel Past President, Adrienne Handley, and Eleanor Longden who runs her own catering business. The photograph below shows the judges at work.

Ty Bridges's starter dish was a Chinese Quiche and his main course was Chinese Beef stir fried with Vermicelli.

After their deliberations the Judges decided that the winner of the Competition was Hannah Parnaby of St Mary’s Catholic High School for her starter of King Scallops served on a bed of pea puree topped with asparagus marinated salad and main course of Sea Bass in a white wine and cream sauce. The Judges agreed that the result was very close and concluded that Alex, Cameron and Ty were all second equal.
Each of the Competitors was awarded a Certificate of Participation and the winner was awarded the Young Chef Trophy to be retained for a year.
