MEETING REPORT

 

Joint-president Mike Hadfield presided at the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield held at the Olde House, Newbold, on Friday 13 November 2015. He welcomed the Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield, Cllr Barry and June Bingham, and Chesterfield BC chief executive Huw Bowen, who were making an official civic visit to the club.  He also welcomed regular guest Frank Clifford, past-president of the Rotary Club of Bolsover, and rotarian Ian Gordon who was returning after a period of ill-health.

 

A board was circulated seeking volunteers from members for Santa’s Charity Fund-Raising Sleigh which will be visiting local supermarkets on various dates during December.

 

In thanking the club for its hospitality, the Mayor revealed that he was supporting three local charities with the Mayor’s Appeal during his mayoral year, which are:- Chesterfield Royal Hospital Eye Centre, Sight Support Derbyshire, and Nenna Kind Cancer Support Drop-In Centre. 

 

Chesterfield BC chief executive Huw Bowen then updated the club on the current exciting developments in and around the town, including news about the Peak Resort, which is a £400m UK flagship tourism attraction being developed at Unstone by Grand Heritage Hotels.  He spoke about the Town-Centre Masterplan, which aims to encourage the development of more homes in and around the town-centre to help increase footfall and improve the evening economy.  There was also positive news about developments at Waterside, Markham Vale, Co-op Elder Way Building, Northern Gateway, Queens Park Sports Centre, Knightsbridge Court (old Courthouse), and St Helena’s Campus for Derby University.  He also shared the positive news that more jobs were being created in the area and unemployment was decreasing.

After a question and answer session the president thanked the civic party for visiting the club. The closing toast was proposed by joint-president David Dolman.
 
At the next meeting on Friday 20 November the guest speaker is Rod Shiers on ‘All Aboard – circumnavigating the British Isles’.  Speaker host is Alan Clarke and duty rotarian is David Dolman.
